PRIMARY PURPOSE: Responsible for the safe and orderly transportation of student on assigned route. Operate a school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from school or designated locations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education / Certification:
- Must possess Valid Class B-CDL with a P and S endorsement.
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have certification of good health as required by the State of Texas and signed by a licensed physician. Ability to pass department physical dexterity test.
- Must possess Texas School Bus Drivers Certification.
Special Knowledge / Skills:
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Must be able to follow verbal instruction.
- Must have an acceptable driving record determined by federal, state and local standards for CDL holders.
- Must pass pre-employment physical and DOT drug screening.
- Must have ability to perform required physical labor.
- Must have computer literacy to perform technology functions required on the modern school bus.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
- Communicate with the schools, department personnel, public, parents and students in such a manner as to encourage their cooperation and respect.
- Identify by name the students who ride the bus.
- Maintain an up-to-date list of students who ride the bus.
- Maintain electronic seating charts.
- Perform Electronic Vehicle Inspection Reports before and after each run.
- Use tablet and Z-Pass reader to take ridership via RFID card swipes for every student entry and exit of the bus.
- Report student behavior issues via the Bus Conduct program, either on office computer or smartphone app.
- Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
- Maintain discipline and reports student discipline problems to appropriate administrators and parents.
- Cooperate with supervisory staff in basic checkout and emergency procedures.
- Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and prepares work orders as needed.
- Provide student counts and reports as requested.
- Report all accidents, vehicle damage, and student injuries, and completes required reports.
- Operate two-way radio equipment and communicate with transportation office.
- Keep assigned bus cleaned and fueled.
- Maintain safety precautions when students are boarding and departing bus.
- Sanitize bus as dictated by CDC, Galveston County Health Department, State of Texas, and Santa Fe ISD guidelines, and directives.
- Attend in-service training programs and monthly staff meetings.
- Display tolerance necessary for accepting supervision for and criticism of job performance.
- Work in harmony with supervisory, faculty, and peer personnel.
- Support and follow administrative and board policy.
- Represent the school system to the community in a positive, professional way.
- Maintain a sincere, friendly attitude toward patrons.
- Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation.
- Enter electronic repair request as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

School Bus, Zonar tablet, Z-Pass reader, desktop computer, sanitizing e-misters and sprayers, bus wash, fuel pumps, CNG connections and gauges, broom

Ability to communicate effectively (written, verbal, and electronically); ability to maintain effective control over groups of students.
Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Use of hands, light lifting (at least 25 lbs.), pushing, reaching, stooping, bending, and kneeling. Operation of motor vehicle (school bus). Works outside & inside; work around moving vehicles; constant noise; exposure to fumes, smoke, sanitizing chemicals, gasoline, diesel, chemicals, dust; slippery or uneven walking surfaces.
Terms of Employment:
Work year established by the board; salary according to current schedule.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually.
