JOB TITLE: SCHOOL BUS DRIVER-SUB

 

REPORTS TO: ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION            PAY GRADE: N/A

PRIMARY PURPOSE: Responsible for the safe and orderly transportation of student on assigned route. Operate a school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from school or designated locations. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education / Certification:

  1. Must possess Valid Class B-CDL with a P and S endorsement.
  2. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  3. Must have certification of good health as required by the State of Texas and signed by a licensed physician. Ability to pass department physical dexterity test.
  4. Must possess Texas School Bus Drivers Certification.

 

Special Knowledge / Skills:

 

  1. Must be 18 years of age.
  2. Must be able to follow verbal instruction.
  3. Must have an acceptable driving record determined by federal, state and local standards for CDL holders.
  4. Must pass pre-employment physical and DOT drug screening.
  5. Must have ability to perform required physical labor.
  6. Must have computer literacy to perform technology functions required on the modern school bus.

 

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

  1. Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  2. Communicate with the schools, department personnel, public, parents and students in such a manner as to encourage their cooperation and respect.
  3. Identify by name the students who ride the bus.
  4. Maintain an up-to-date list of students who ride the bus.
  5. Maintain electronic seating charts.
  6. Perform Electronic Vehicle Inspection Reports before and after each run.
  7. Use tablet and Z-Pass reader to take ridership via RFID card swipes for every student entry and exit of the bus.
  8. Report student behavior issues via the Bus Conduct program, either on office computer or smartphone app.
  9. Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
  10. Maintain discipline and reports student discipline problems to appropriate administrators and parents.
  11. Cooperate with supervisory staff in basic checkout and emergency procedures.
  12. Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and prepares work orders as needed.
  13. Provide student counts and reports as requested.
  14. Report all accidents, vehicle damage, and student injuries, and completes required reports.
  15. Operate two-way radio equipment and communicate with transportation office.
  16. Keep assigned bus cleaned and fueled.
  17. Maintain safety precautions when students are boarding and departing bus.
  18. Sanitize bus as dictated by CDC, Galveston County Health Department, State of Texas, and Santa Fe ISD guidelines, and directives.
  19. Attend in-service training programs and monthly staff meetings.
  20. Display tolerance necessary for accepting supervision for and criticism of job performance.
  21. Work in harmony with supervisory, faculty, and peer personnel.
  22. Support and follow administrative and board policy.
  23. Represent the school system to the community in a positive, professional way.
  24. Maintain a sincere, friendly attitude toward patrons.
  25. Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation.
  26. Enter electronic repair request as needed.
  27. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

EQUIPMENT USED:

School Bus, Zonar tablet, Z-Pass reader, desktop computer, sanitizing e-misters and sprayers, bus wash, fuel pumps, CNG connections and gauges, broom

 

Working Conditions:

 

Mental Demands:

Ability to communicate effectively (written, verbal, and electronically); ability to maintain effective control over groups of students.

 

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Use of hands, light lifting (at least 25 lbs.), pushing, reaching, stooping, bending, and kneeling. Operation of motor vehicle (school bus). Works outside & inside; work around moving vehicles; constant noise; exposure to fumes, smoke, sanitizing chemicals, gasoline, diesel, chemicals, dust; slippery or uneven walking surfaces.

 

Terms of Employment:

Work year established by the board; salary according to current schedule.

 

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually.
